What the IELTS Band Descriptors Actually Mean by “Mechanical Cohesion”

In the IELTS Writing descriptors, Band 6 cohesion may be “faulty or mechanical,” while Band 7 cohesion is used more “appropriately.” This article explains what that difference looks like in real student writing and how teachers can respond more precisely.

The official IELTS Writing Band Descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion at Band 6 say that candidates “use cohesive devices effectively, but cohesion within and/or between sentences may be faulty or mechanical.” At Band 7, the descriptor says writers “use a range of cohesive devices appropriately, although there may be some under-/over-use.”

That contrast matters.

The issue is not simply whether a student can insert linking words. The issue is whether those linking choices actually help the reader follow the logic of the writing.

In practice, many Band 6 essays contain plenty of cohesive devices. The problem is that those devices often feel formulaic, overused, or only loosely connected to the relationship between the ideas on the page. By Band 7, the writing usually feels more natural because the cohesive devices are chosen with better judgment and better fit.

This is an important distinction for teachers. When you write “mechanical cohesion” on a script, you are usually not saying the student used the wrong words in a grammatical sense. You are saying the cohesion feels template-driven rather than meaning-driven.

What “mechanical” is doing in the descriptor

The word “mechanical” does a lot of work in the Band 6 descriptor. It suggests that the writing may rely on cohesive devices in a way that feels automatic, rigid, or detached from the real movement of the argument.

That does not mean every linking word is incorrect. In fact, many Band 6 essays contain perfectly recognizable connectors. The issue is that the cohesion often feels externally applied rather than internally earned by the logic of the ideas.

Three signs of mechanical cohesion

Mechanical cohesion often appears in recurring patterns. Once you know what to look for, these patterns become easier to spot quickly in student writing.

1. Template-driven sequencing

This is one of the most common forms. A student organizes a paragraph as a numbered list of reasons:

There are several advantages to remote work. Firstly, employees save time on commuting. Secondly, they can work in comfortable environments. Finally, companies reduce overhead costs.

Nothing is obviously ungrammatical here. The problem is that the paragraph reads more like a template than a developed line of thought.

The cohesive devices are doing organizational display work, but they are not showing much relationship between the ideas beyond sequence. The result is tidy, but rigid.

2. Mismatched connectors

This happens when the linking word does not match the actual relationship between the sentences:

Many employees prefer flexible schedules. However, they can balance work and family responsibilities more easily.

Here, “however” signals contrast, but the second sentence supports the first rather than opposing it. The problem is not a lack of cohesion. It is inaccurate cohesion.

A more natural version might be:

Many employees prefer flexible schedules because they can balance work and family responsibilities more easily.

This kind of mismatch often appears when students have been told to use more linking words, but have not been trained to test whether the connector genuinely fits the logic.

3. Decorative transitions

This appears when a student adds linking language that is technically acceptable but functionally unnecessary:

In addition to this, remote work also offers flexibility.
Furthermore, it is important to note that technology has improved significantly.

These transitions are not necessarily wrong, but they do very little. The sentence relationships were already clear. The extra signposting adds weight without adding clarity.

Band 7 writing often feels stronger, partly because it does not oversignal every move. It uses cohesive devices when they help, not simply because they are available.

Why do students fall into this pattern

Mechanical cohesion is often less about vocabulary knowledge and more about how students have been taught to use linking devices.

In many IELTS classrooms, students are given categorized lists of linkers: addition words, contrast words, result words, and sequence words. That can be a useful starting point, but it easily becomes a problem if students come to believe that more visible linking automatically means a higher Coherence and Cohesion score.

Once that belief takes hold, students start inserting cohesive devices for display rather than for meaning. They use “firstly,” “moreover,” and “however” because those words look academic, not because they best express the relationship between ideas.

This is reinforced by rigid template teaching. If students are trained to produce fixed introduction patterns, fixed paragraph shapes, and fixed reason sequences, the essay can start to feel assembled rather than developed.

Another problem is that students are rarely shown the difference between acceptable cohesion and natural cohesion. They may see a Band 6 essay and a Band 7 essay, but not always receive a clear explanation of why one feels more fluid than the other.

What Band 7 does differently

The Band 7 descriptor does not say that writers use more cohesive devices. It says they use a range of cohesive devices appropriately.

That word matters.

Appropriateness means the device matches the relationship it is supposed to express. It also means the writer does not rely on visible connectors when another form of cohesion would work better.

A Band 7 writer may create flow through:

  • clear sentence progression
  • pronoun reference
  • lexical repetition or variation
  • subordinate structures
  • tighter paragraph logic

rather than by repeatedly inserting discourse markers at the start of sentences.

In other words, stronger cohesion often looks less obvious on the surface. It feels more natural because the relationships between ideas are built into the writing itself.

How to teach beyond linking-word templates

If you want students to move beyond mechanical cohesion, the goal is not to teach more linking words. The goal is to teach better judgment about relationships between ideas.

Use a “remove the linkers” exercise

Take a student paragraph and remove every explicit linker such as “however,” “moreover,” “firstly,” and “in addition.”

Then ask: Can the reader still follow the logic?

If the answer is no, the problem may not be the missing connectors. The problem may be weak idea development. If the answer is yes, the student may already have a stronger logical structure than they realize, and can then add back only the devices that genuinely help.

This is a quick way to test whether cohesion is coming from meaning or from templates.

Teach sentence combining

Give students two short sentences and ask them to combine them in a way that reflects the real relationship between the ideas.

For example:

Remote work saves commuting time. Employees are more productive.

Students might produce:

  • Remote work saves commuting time, so employees are more productive.
  • Because remote work saves commuting time, employees are more productive.
  • Remote work saves commuting time. As a result, employees are often more productive.

Each version is cohesive, but each creates a slightly different emphasis. This helps students see cohesion as a matter of choice and judgment, not just insertion.

Use before-and-after comparisons

Show a paragraph with mechanical cohesion:

Online learning has several benefits. Firstly, it is convenient. Secondly, it is affordable. Finally, it offers flexibility.

Then show a more natural rewrite:

Online learning appeals to many students because it removes commuting time and allows them to study at more suitable hours. That flexibility can also reduce costs, since students are not always paying for fixed classroom attendance.

Then ask students what changed. Usually, they notice that the second version feels more connected even though it contains fewer visible linking words.

Limit the number of explicit connectors

A useful classroom exercise is to ask students to write a paragraph using only one explicit linking word.

This forces them to create cohesion through clearer sequencing, reference, and development. It also helps them break the habit of treating cohesive devices as decoration.

Stop teaching linker lists in isolation

Linking words are not useless, but they should be taught in context. Students need to see what relationship a linker expresses, why it works in one place, and why it may be unnecessary or misleading in another.

The most important teaching point is simple: examiners do not reward frequency for its own sake. They reward cohesion that helps the writing make sense.

Why this matters for feedback

When teachers identify “mechanical cohesion” clearly, their feedback becomes much more useful.

Instead of writing vague comments like “improve cohesion,” you can point to a specific problem:

  • sequence markers are replacing real development
  • the connector does not match the relationship
  • the transition is present but unnecessary
